FC 24: The game is on track

The world of football has changed dramatically since May 2022. Cristiano Ronaldo now plays in Saudi Arabia and Lionel Messi eventually won the World Cup before moving to David Beckham's ambitious American club Inter Miami. In response to these tumultuous changes, EA Sports and FUT announced the dissolution of their partnership on May 10, 2022, ending a 30-year relationship. So instead of the expected remake of our favorite FUT video game series every year, what we have now is a game with a slightly awkward name: EA Sports FC 24.
Couldn't the world's most famous football video game, in fact, one of the most popular and longest-running video game series, have a better name? Can you really imagine "let's check out EA Sports FC this weekend"?
However, EA Sports FC 24 is more than just a title overhaul. In fact, it's an encouraging hint that EA Sports might take the title.
Habit change
Fortunately, despite parting ways with FUT, EA Sports still has the rights to use the original names of most football clubs and players. So there's no need to play London B's game against Man Red on a rainy Friday night. Of course, you have to adapt to some changes. After years of boxy, simple, side-scrolling main menus that looked like they were straight out of the Windows XP era, EA Sports has given FC24's menus a sleek new look.The main menu is now arranged vertically and the fields are somewhat cleaner and more modern. Additionally, submenus within the various game modes now have more things to do, making them more complex. Not all menus have been completely redesigned, but thankfully things like mapping actions and matching camera adjustments remain the same. This is a wise decision by EA.
For players
For players, it seems to be getting better due to "game style" and better artificial intelligence. If he plays alongside Erling Haaland, he has a better chance of completing the instinctive forward's attack. Likewise, if Casemiro is in the center of the opposition's defense, he will have difficulty dealing with counterattacks and will often be at a disadvantage.Brighton and Hove Albion and Newcastle United have been updated to feel more authentic. EA offers more realistic difficulty levels. This means sticking to a template team against a front-runner team is no longer enough to win big. When you play against a team like Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, even if you are 3-0 up, you can easily concede two goals in the final stages.
The playing styles of top players vary greatly. With Marcus Rashford at his best, his dribbling ability is much better than before. Likewise, if Messi is in the team, he can shoot with stunning accuracy when needed, or like the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, he can fool Josco Gvaldiol or Virgil van Dijk. All of this has a huge impact on overall gameplay. If you don't time your tackles at the perfect time, you'll end up conceding too many free kicks or penalties. Defending becomes more difficult tactically, but also requires more effort and thought. This is especially true in manager mode.

While it may seem similar at first glance, it's clear a lot of thought went into the game itself. It feels like there's more to do and think about at every stage of the game, which is the breath of fresh air this game needs.
Could it have been better?
Honestly, it's probably possible. After all, EA developers have been publicly aware of their breakup with FUT for over a year. What EA Sports FC 24 misses out on is Alex Hunter's story, which in past FUT provided compelling gameplay that kept players hooked.For some reason, Hunters have been missing since FUT 19, and we haven't seen any trace of a solid story mode in five years. The Junior Manager mode's cutscene (where the player undergoes a medical exam) seems mildly interesting at first, but quickly starts to feel silly and uninteresting. What about next year?
All in all, EA Sports FC 24 is a standard-bearer for beautiful gaming virtual entertainment and offers encouragement for the future. More could be done, but EA is definitely on board with the game and on the right track.
